What it is

The Collegiate Church of the Holy Cross and St Bartholomew, kolegiata Świętego Krzyża i św. Bartłomieja in Polish, stands on Cathedral Island (Ostrów Tumski). It is a Gothic brick church built on two storeys: formally two churches, the Holy Cross church above and St Bartholomew's below.

Both belong to the parish of the cathedral, and services are held here.

Henry Probus's church

Duke Henry IV Probus founded the church in 1288, after ending a long dispute with the bishop of Wrocław, Thomas II.

Henry died in 1290 and was buried in the part of the chancel that was already built. His tomb is no longer in the church.

1945 and after

Damaged in the siege, and rebuilt.

The church was damaged in 1945, the roof and the vaults of the upper church among it, and was rebuilt after the war.

Until 1997

The Greek Catholic community used the church until 1997, when it was given St Vincent and St James instead.

Inside

The upper church is a tall hall of white pillars under net and ribbed vaults.
