Cathedral

The Gothic Archcathedral of St John the Baptist on Ostrów Tumski, badly damaged in 1945 and rebuilt in the years after.

What it is

The Archcathedral of St John the Baptist stands on Ostrów Tumski. It is a Gothic church, built on the site of smaller earlier churches; the present building dates from the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries.

Rebuilt after 1945

In the spring of 1945, during the siege of Festung Breslau, the cathedral was about 70 percent destroyed, including the nave vaults, the roof, the tower roofs and the organ. Rebuilding made it usable by 1951; new roofs on the towers were not installed until the 1990s.
