Most Tumski

The steel bridge of 1889 between Piasek island and Ostrów Tumski, once hung with couples' padlocks, which are now forbidden.

What it is

Most Tumski — the Tumski Bridge — crosses the Odra between Piasek island and Ostrów Tumski. It is a riveted steel bridge, built in 1889.

The padlocks

Couples hung padlocks with their names on the bridge and threw the keys into the Odra. At times the padlocks weighed more than two tonnes, and they were removed several times. Hanging padlocks on the bridge is now forbidden, and city services remove new ones.

Name

Cathedral Bridge until 1945.

Until 1945 the bridge was called Most Katedralny, the Cathedral Bridge. At the Piasek end stand figures of St Hedwig, patron saint of Silesia, and St John the Baptist, patron of the archdiocese and the cathedral.

Seeing it

Maintenance can close or restrict the bridge from time to time; this page does not track that.
