Landmark
Japanese Garden
Ogród Japoński: a garden in Szczytnicki Park, laid out in 1913 for the Centennial Exhibition and reopened in 1999 after restoration.
What it is
The Japanese Garden is part of Szczytnicki Park, in the southern part of the park, near the Pergola by the Centennial Hall. It is looked after by the city’s greenery management, Zarząd Zieleni Miejskiej.
Made for the exhibition
The garden was made in 1913 as part of the Centennial Exhibition. The idea came from Count Fritz von Hochberg, who brought in the Japanese gardener Mankichi Arai for the project.
When the exhibition ended, the Japanese elements were removed. The paths, the pond and some of the planting stayed.
Restored
Rebuilt with Japanese specialists, reopened in 1999.
In the 1990s the city restored the garden together with specialists from Japan. In 1997 the flood destroyed the restored garden, and it was repaired and opened to the public again in 1999.
Visiting
The garden has its own page on the website of the city greenery management: zzm.wroc.pl, Ogród Japoński. More places to see are listed on the landmarks page.
