Iglica

The Needle: a steel spire next to the Centennial Hall, put up in 1948 for the Recovered Territories Exhibition.

What it is

The Iglica (Polish for “needle”) is a steel spire that stands next to the Centennial Hall, in the square in front of it. It was designed by the engineer Stanisław Hempel.

Why it was built

The spire was built in 1948 for the Recovered Territories Exhibition (Wystawa Ziem Odzyskanych) in Wrocław.

The exhibition was organised to show the achievements of the new authorities in the western and northern lands that had become part of Poland after the Second World War, and to stress Poland’s historical rights to them.

Seeing it

The Iglica stands beside the Centennial Hall, so the two are seen together. Read about the hall on its own page, and find more places on the landmarks page.
