Rynek
Wrocław's Market Square: laid out after 1241, rebuilt after 1945, with the Ratusz in the middle.
What it is
The Rynek is the centre of the medieval town. It was laid out after the destruction of 1241 as the middle of a regular grid.
The Ratusz does not stand on the edge but in the middle, among a block of other buildings, with the houses of the burghers around the outside.
The houses
Rebuilt after 1945.
The buildings around the square were damaged in 1945 and rebuilt afterwards.
On the square
The pręgierz. The stone pillory by the Ratusz is a replica, set up in 1985, of the original of 1492, which did not survive the war.
The Fredro monument. Leonard Marconi's statue of the playwright Aleksander Fredro was made for Lwów and unveiled there in 1897. After the war it came to Wrocław, as the Panorama did, and was unveiled on the Rynek on 15 July 1956.
The guitar record. On 1 May the Rynek hosts the Gitarowy Rekord Guinnessa, in which guitarists play Jimi Hendrix's “Hey Joe” together. The first edition on the Rynek was in 2003, started by Leszek Cichoński.
Seeing it
The Ratusz has its own page, Ratusz, and the rest of the landmarks are listed on the landmarks page.
