Pręgierz

The pillory on the Rynek: a replica, put up in 1985, of the original of 1492.

What it is

A pręgierz is a pillory: a post to which convicted people were tied. Wrocław’s stands on the Rynek, and Wrocławians use it as a place to meet.

Original and replica

The pillory was put up on the Rynek in 1492. A pillory of wood had stood before it.

The original was destroyed in 1945. The pillory seen today is a copy of it, put up in 1985.

Seeing it

The original was topped by a figure of an executioner holding a sword and a bundle of rods, called Roland.

It is on the Rynek; more places to see are listed on the landmarks page.
