Hala Targowa

The Market Hall: a brick building with two towers, whose roof rests on reinforced-concrete arches.

What it is

Hala Targowa is a covered market hall at ulica Piaskowa 17, at the corner of plac Nankiera and ulica Świętego Ducha, close to the Piaskowy Bridge on the Odra. It was built when the city was Breslau, as one of two market halls built there. The site had been occupied by the Piasek Arsenal.

Designed and built

The hall was built to a design by Richard Plüddemann and Heinrich Küster. Its outside is brick in a Neo-Gothic style, with two towers carrying clock faces.

The building has three longitudinal naves and a full basement. Over the main nave the roof is carried on parabolic arches of reinforced concrete.

After the war

Restored by 1983.

The hall was damaged in the Second World War. A major renovation in the early 1980s was completed in 1983. The building is entered in the register of monuments.

Seeing it

Look at the outside for the brickwork, the towers and their clock faces, then at the roof from inside, where the concrete arches show. More places to see are listed on the landmarks page.

Opening times and trading days change; this page does not carry them. Check with the hall before you go.
